My gas stove is out to get me! Another story in this morning's WaPo is Worried about having a gas stove? Here’s how to limit risks. Good grief, will 'they' never stop giving us hazards to beware of? Pollutants in the atmosphere, contaminants in our homes, dangers in our medicine cabinets, dangers in our diets, too much salt, too much sugar, too much fat, too many carbs, noise pollution, light pollution, exposure to blue light from computer screens, this, that, the other thing. Zeynep Trufecki's column in this morning's NYT is all about bird flu evolving to become transmissible to humans with a higher lethality rate than covid-19. Everywhere a hazard, everything a danger. Chinese surveillance balloon transiting the U.S. - loaded with lethal viruses? Biochemicals? Snooping on our finances? Seeing who watches porn? Living is going to kill us all!!! Reminds me for some reason of 'nobody likes me/everybody hates me/think I'll eat some worms!' and Dorothy Parker's Resume: Razors pain you / Rivers are damp / Acids stain you / And drugs cause cramp / Guns aren’t lawful / Nooses give / Gas smells awful / You might as well live.
Frick & Frack, U.S. & Israel. Headline in this morning's WaPo: ‘Guns are everywhere’ in Israel, occupied territories as violence spikes. "The violence underscores what security experts have been observing in recent years — a flood of illegal arms into Palestinian communities, including East Jerusalem, where local arms traffickers say business has never been better. The same is happening in Palestinian Israeli towns, where a political and security vacuum has allowed criminal gangs to flourish, and spurred ordinary people to buy guns for their own protection. . . . In response to the recent attacks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new hard-right government has pledged to issue thousands of new gun permits to Israeli civilians. Netanyahu says that more guns in the hands of more trained Israelis will save lives, empowering citizens to act as a first line of defense." A Palestinian gun dealer in East Jerusalem said: “Guns are everywhere. You want a gun? You can buy a gun in an hour. You can buy a handgun. They’re not cheap. You can even buy a machine gun, or an assault rifle. They’re very expensive. But demand is very high. So it is a very good business,” said Abu Sabir, who has been arrested and jailed several times for gun possession and selling. Abu Sabir suggested that being a gun merchant was a respectable profession in his community and not forbidden by Islam — as opposed to drug dealing, which he called “shameful.” “Americans love guns, no?” he asked playfully. “Now Palestinians love guns.”
'Da boids' Looking out my window at the little downey woodpecker loading up on suet-embedded seeds and a small flock of goldfinches working on the niger feeder. I haven't seen much action on our 2 tubes of sunflower seeds but I see they are both half-empty so we're getting more visitors than I see. For some reason, I'm thinking of the great scene in The Producers in which Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom seek out Franz Liebkind to play Hitler in Springtime for Hitler. "Concierge: Who d'ya want? Nobody gets in the building unless I know who they want. I'm the "concierge". My husband used to be the "concierge", but he's dead. Now I'M the "concierge Max Bialystock: We are seeking Franz Liebkind. Concierge: Oh... the Kraut! He's on the top floor, apartment 23. Max Bialystock: Thank you... Concierge:...But you won't find him there... he's up on the roof with his boids. He keeps boids. Dirty... disgusting... filthy... lice-ridden boids. You used to be able to sit out on the stoop like a person. Not anymore! No, sir! Boids!... You get my drift? Leo Bloom: We... uh... get your "drift". Thank you, madam. Concierge: I'm not a "madam"! I'm a "concierge"!
We all seek status in life.
Big birthday day tomorrow. Lizzie turns 13, Micalea turns 72, Jessie St. John turns 53. Lizzzie enters her teen years. Caela has her first birthday in 40 years or so without Tom. Jessie has her first birthday without her father. I went to Winkie's to get a birthday card for Lizzie and a Valentine's Day card and another birthday card for Geri to add to my stash.
