Geri's birthday gathering was, as usual, delightful.  Steve and Nikki came up from Chicago, and David, Sharon, and Ellis were here.  The conversation never lags with this ensemble, and last night was no exception.  On the other hand, however, there was a noticeably different tone to much of the conversation because of what is happening in the country under Trump's presidency, with elements of anger (mostly from David and Sharon,) fear, anxiety, resistance, and hopelessness (mostly from me.)  The political situation did not cast a pall over the celebration and the joyfulness from simply being together, it did have some dampening effect on some of the conversation before and after dinner.  What Trump is doing is the unignorable elephant in many families' homes.  Ellis helped to elevate everybody's spirits, as usual.  She's a remarkable 10-year-old, highly intelligent, very verbal, very comfortable around adults,  very outgoing, and very affectionate with all family members, especially her Nonna.  Steve brought his Mom a present, a ceramic spoon rest that he made in a pottery class that he and Nikki are attending (and very much enjoying.)  He also brought some morning glory seeds from  his garden, which are soaking in water in the spoon rest, hopefully to sprout soon and be planted in our backyard where Geri hopes they will climb and entwine a damaged tree.
