7/6/23

 Thursday, July 6, 2023

In bed at 10:20, up at 5:04, nasty back pain, roaring tinnitus.  64℉, high of 73, mostly cloudy day, AQI = 25, Good.  Wind N at 9 mph, 1 to 11 mph, gusts up to 18 mph, .65 in of rain in last 24 hours, little expected today.  Sunrise at 5:18, sunset at 8:34, 15+15.

1968 to 1/6/2021.   In half a century the U.S. and the world have shifted from mass movement from the Left to mass movements from the Right.  What happened?  Why? 1968: January, the Prague Spring; March, LBJ barely won NH primary over Gene McCarthy, RFK entered race; April, student protests at Columbia U, in France & Germany; May, Paris student & worker riot; June, student riots in Belgrade, Rio de Janeiro; August, DNC national convention in Chicago, Days of Rage, hippies, yippies, turn on, tune in, drop out,  police riots; SDS, Weathermen, SCLC, Black Power groups, et al.  1964 Civil Rights Act, 1965 Voting Rights Act, 1968 Fair Housing Act,  Under Nixon, National Environmental Policy Act (EPA), Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Consumer Product Safety Act.  From that era to this - what, how, why?  From the Great Society to Make America Great Again and Trump.  The Decline and Fall of America.  Dark money, the Koch brothers, evangelical mobilization with Falwell, Robertson, et al., Reagan, Gingrich, White resentment, White supremacy, backlash, whitelash, etc. et al. and so it goes.

America, and crown thy good with brotherhood.  From this morning's WaPo: "There have been at least 21 mass shootings — which the Gun Violence Archive defines as incidents in which four or more people are killed or injured by gunfire — since the start of [July], according to the group. In all, 20 people died and 127 were injured, the group found, continuing a sharp uptick in mass shootings over the holiday that began in 2020."

My knockoff painting of Camille Claudel by an unknown artist
How I'm feeling today

Knockoff of Camille Claudel portrait.  This is the first painting I have attempted in what seems like months, or at least one month.  Last painting was of Trump looking slant-eye while sitting at the defense counsel table at his arraignment in New York on April 4th.  Much of the background I painted with traditional gouache on canvas.  I overpainted the dress with carmine acrylic paint, the collar with unbleached titanium acrylic paint, and her hair with carbon black.  It's now at the most dangerous stage, ready to be ruined, the better becoming the enemy of the 'good enough.'  Leave it alone and enjoy the colors and simplicity or risk wrecking it?

LTMW at John McGregor walking a puppy on a leash.  I'm guessing the puppy is the replacement for their last white labrador Armand who was a replacement for their white lab Zoe.  The puppy is black with white markings and doesn't seem to be a lab.  It looks like David and Sharon's labradoodle Coco. . . . Geri tells me its a Bernese Poodle mix, a Berndoodle?

Jenin.  The killings will never stop.  Is there any hope for Israel?  for the Palestinians?  I think not.  What does this mean for the U.S.?
