3/9/23

 Thursday, March 9, 2023

In bed at 11, up at 6:07, from long, elaborate dream set in England, directing a production of JC Superstar, assigning roles, etc.  34℉ with flurries, 10 mph E wind directly off the lake, Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 p.m. until 10 a.m. Friday.  Sunrise at 6:12, sunset at 5:50, 11+36.

Mitch McConnell's Falls.  McConnell tripped and fell at a Washington hotel last night and is hospitalized and "being treated." No explanation of what treatment is necessary or why it is necessary. In August of 2019, he fell and fractured his shoulder, requiring hospitalization, treatment, and rehab.  In 2020, news photos emerged showing his hands badly bruised and bandaged; he refused to release any information about the cause.  McConnell is 6 months younger than me.  This morning as I stood still and prepared to open the Venetian blinds next to my recliner, I lost my balance and stumbled backward, sideways.  I wasn't moving when I lost my balance, just standing still. I've been a high fall risk for years, scary since any fall can mean the end of any kind of enjoyable life, worse than death.  I'm reminded of it whenever I watch footage of McConnell walking or dealing with steps.  Ditto Diane Feinstein, Joe Biden, et al.  Vulnerable, vulnerable, vulnerable, is the mantra for octogenarians.

Reflections in a Golden Eye.  What a goofy story.  What a goofy movie.  How could a flick with Elizabeth Taylor, Brian Keith, Julie Harris, and especially Marlon Brando be so weird?  Why would Brando agree to star in this role?  John Huston directed this???  And that Philipino 'houseboy'?!?  And the nudist stableboy?  When will I learn I have no appetite for Southern Gothic freak stories, grotesques, despite Flannery O'Connor?  Awful, really awful.
