Charles D. ClausenYesterday at 6:36 AM ·Shared with Your friendsAm I wrong in thinking that this is a big part of why our government doesn't work anymore, which is another way of saying that our democracy just doesn't work anymore, which is another way of saying that our constitutional form of republic doesn't work anymore? Surely not the only part, but a big part. We endured a civil war 165 years ago when it became clear that the government didn't work anymore, and I'm wondering whether we're near that point again. Not a shooting war, like the last one, but a legal one - what Marjorie Taylor Green calls "a divorce" between Red America and Blue America. The legal divorce would probably take the form of reverting from a constitutional union to some variant of confederation, such as we had between 1881 and 1889, when the Constitution became effective. If we think it would be impossible, consider to what degree the very essence of our government has been changed just in the last year under Trump, the Republican Congress, and the Republican Supreme Court. They have another year before the next midterm election. Trump has another 3 years before his term expires. God only knows how long the Supreme Court will be dominated by its very conservative majority. Stand back and standby.
