Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? I learned that quotation from Juvenal's Satires in my freshman year Latin class at Leo High School. It means, who will guard the guards themselves? Who will protect us from the people who are supposed to protect us? Who will police the police? Who will secure us from violence from those who are entrusted to secure us from violence? Who will protect us from Donald Trump and Stephen Miller, from Kristi Noem, Tom Homan, and their agents?
I need to remind myself that the world is full of saints and heroes, too.
Some thoughts today: (1) Why would anyone choose to be an ICE agent in the Trump administration, or in any administration? What kind of man wants to do that kind of work? Do you have to be a thug at heart? Isn't it radically different from being a police officer, a sheriff, or a military man? (2) Tom Homan is said to be almost a daily communicant, a fervent, practicing Roman Catholic. What goes on in his head, heart, and soul? (3) How many government cover-ups have I lived through? (a) The JFK assassination files; (b) The Pentagon Papers [1971]; (c) The Watergate cover-ups; (d) The Iraq invasion intelligence; (e) The Iran-Contra Affair [1985-1987]; (f) CIA "Black Sites" and enhanced interrogation [2001-2009]; (g) The FBI COINTELPRO surveillance program [1956-1971]; (h) NSA mass dinestuc surveillance program; (i) The Afghanistan Papers (2019); (j) hundreds, thousands, countless, unknown but successful others?
Why would anyone believe anything our government tells us? Why would anyone believe anything that any other government tells us, not only our enemies, but also our friends, including the government of Israel?
