Season 1 of HBO's Succession. We watched the last episode of this series last night after semi-binging on the earlier episodes the last few days. Immensely entertaining because of the acting, the storyline, and the cinematography, I normally don't care for plots that feature almost all unlikeable characters, but this one is hard to pull away from. Geri is reminded of the Murdoch family; I'm reminded of the Trumps and now that I think of it, the Robert Maxwell family. Cast: Logan Roy, the ruthless patriarch; Connor, child of Logan's first marriage, a ditz, emotionally unstable, megalomaniac; Kendall, sometimes-recovering addict, also ruthless' Roman, emotionally stunted; Siobhan, political consultant, sneaky, and of course ruthless; Tom, her husband, a sycophant; and Greg, Logan's nephew, immature suckbutt. All of loyal mainly to themselves and their interests, all appear to be amoral.
Our Town. A boy was shot in the parking lot of Southridge Mall Monday night, Greendale police say. Police did not provide the age of the victim, but said it was a "juvenile" who suffered a "serious gunshot wound," was transported to a hospital, and is expected to survive. The suspected shooter is also a "juvenile male" and is in custody, but initially fled the scene, according to police. He will be transported to the Milwaukee County Juvenile Justice Center, police said. And the beat goes on . . .
Amitriptyline. I'm not tolerating this med very well. Still some dry mouth, dizziness, and drowsiness. 'Drowsiness' is minimizing the somnolence. More brain fog which may be independent of the drowsiness or simply a part of it. In either case, it's a pretty significant problem, causing me to nod off morning and afternoon even after a relatively long night's sleep. It makes me concerned about doubling and then tripling the strength of the drug over the next two weeks. I've been forgetting to take my morning meds which are pretty important in terms of BP and stroke prevention. The chronic pain continues, hoping for improvement next week.
The County is an unusual little film from Iceland that I watched on OVID this afternoon (between naps.) A very rural county in Iceland is organized around a co-op that has become dictatorial over time, punishing locals who buy anything from any source other than the co-op. A middle-aged woman, Ingabjord, whose husband was pressured into 'ratting' on his neighbors who violated the rule about purchasing only from the co-op to avoid his beloved farm being foreclosed by the co-op commits suicide. His widow places an essay on Facebook accusing the co-op of being 'the Mafia' and leads a successful effort for the local dairy farmers to form their own co-op to free themselves from the dictatorial larger co-op. No good deed goes unpunished and the nasty co-op forecloses on her farm. That's it. Simple story, almost documentary in style, but enjoyable.
The Gaffer. This cartoon strip of my favorite series brings on many memories. First of my Dad who got a big kick out of Geri's fly-swatting prowess and especially the vigor with which she swatted unwelcome pests. He called her "the gaffer," a probably now-obsolete term for foreman, based on her take-charge inclination about household tasks. Second, it reminds me of Kitty, with whom I would share daily chuckles over the Pickles family and the relationship between Earl and Opal Pickle, which reminded us, and still reminds me, of ourselves and our families.
{Couldn't copy the cartoon strip.)
